Our 3 Favorite Gravel Bike Tours

Our 3 Favorite Gravel Bike Tours Around Aktivhotel Alpendorf

We’re passionate gravel bikers ourselves and spend many of our free hours exploring the trails around Alpendorf. The combination of stunning natural scenery, athletic challenge, and the freedom to discover new routes makes every ride special. That’s why we’d love to share our three personal favorite gravel bike tours with you.

Tip: You’ll find all of these tours on Komoot (Aktivhotel Alpendorf profile), making them easy to follow.

#1 To Böndlsee – Two Route Options

Option 1: 41 km | 940 m elevation gain
Option 2: 38.7 km | 770 m elevation gain

This varied tour takes you to the idyllic Böndlsee – the perfect destination on a warm summer’s day. Our tip: Don’t forget your swimsuit!

One of the most beautiful sections leads from Schwarzach towards Goldeggweng. The route passes through the “Putzengraben,” following shaded trails alongside a small stream – ideal for comfortable riding, even on hot days.

Once you arrive at Böndlsee, treat yourself to an ice cream or a light snack on the lakeside terrace. And if you fancy cooling off, simply jump into the lake.

The village of Goldegg is also well worth a visit. Historic Goldegg Castle and the picturesque Goldegger See are located directly along the route, or on the shorter option.

#2 Ancient Roman Road & Werfenweng

50.8 km | 690 m elevation gain

This tour begins along the Alpe Adria Cycle Path towards Salzburg. After Bischofshofen, you’ll climb the historic Ancient Roman Road. Much of the route runs through the forest, providing welcome shade during the summer months.

Your destination is Werfenweng – a charming village with several cafés and great places to stop for refreshments. The spectacular views of the Tennengebirge mountain range make the climb more than worthwhile.

A perfect ride for anyone who enjoys combining a sporting challenge with beautiful scenery.

#3 Buchberg Church

34.8 km | 450 m elevation gain

Buchberg Church, located above Bischofshofen, is one of the region’s most beautiful viewpoints. Surrounded by meadows and forests, this peaceful spot offers magnificent views of the surrounding mountains, including the impressive Hochkönig massif.

With only moderate elevation gain, this route is ideal for a relaxed gravel bike ride or an easy outing between bigger adventures.

If you’re still looking for a little more fun afterwards, stop by the St. Johann Golf Course and enjoy a round of mini golf.

And as a little bonus, here’s a fourth tour – one we simply couldn’t keep to ourselves.

#4 Around Hochgründeck

62.9 km | 810 m elevation gain

This tour is perfect if you enjoy picking up the pace. The first section towards Wagrain is a little busier with traffic, but you’ll be well rewarded afterwards.

From Wagrain to Eben, the route follows dedicated cycle paths through beautiful countryside. Afterwards, the stretch from Eben to Bischofshofen is almost entirely downhill – ideal for building up some speed. The final 15 kilometers lead comfortably back to St. Johann along the Alpe Adria Cycle Path.
