Our Favorite Mountain Huts in the Region
We grew up here and know the mountains around St. Johann like the back of our hand. That’s why we’d love to share our personal favorite hikes and alpine huts with you. But pssst – don’t tell anyone!
#1 Pronebenalm in Mühlbach
WOW! The view of the majestic Hochkönig will take your breath away. On top of that, you’ll enjoy one of the best traditional alpine snacks in the region. The hosts welcome you with genuine warmth and great attention to detail. The hut is beautifully decorated – natural, cozy, and full of charm. It’s a place where you instantly feel at home.
Our tip: Be sure to try the homemade fruit juices!
Hiking options
- From St. Johann via Rettenebenalm (approx. 10 minutes by car) – hiking time approx. 1.5 hours
Tip: Don’t miss the summit of Hochglocker. The additional detour takes about 1 hour and is absolutely worth it. - From Mühlbach (approx. 25 minutes by car from Aktivhotel Alpendorf) – hiking time approx. 45 minutes
- From St. Veit, starting at Althausalm (approx. 20 minutes by car) – hiking time approx. 1 hour
#2 Maurachalm
At Maurachalm, there’s music, laughter, and of course outstanding food. The hut is lovingly run by a family where every generation lends a hand. Whenever time allows, the hosts pick up their instruments and create a truly authentic alpine atmosphere filled with music and good spirits.
A special highlight is the beautiful flower garden in front of the hut. And if you’re lucky, you’ll get to enjoy freshly baked Bauernkrapfen – simply delicious!
Hiking options
- Take the Alpendorf gondola to Gernkogel and continue via Sonntagskogel to Maurachalm. Total hiking time approx. 3 hours. Sonntagskogel is a wonderful panoramic peak and well worth the extra detour.
- From Großarl (approx. 20 minutes by car) – hiking time approx. 1.5 hours
#3 Vogeihütte
What we love most about this hike is the trail itself. The route leads through beautiful forest sections for about 1.5 hours and is also a favorite among locals. Some parts are a little steeper, but you’ll be rewarded with fantastic views over St. Johann and the surrounding mountains.
Once you reach the hut, make sure to try the desserts. The hut owner is a passionate pastry chef and well known for his outstanding homemade cakes and pastries.
Our tip: Along the trail, you’ll find two tree-top courses where you can glide from tree to tree – completely free of charge and great fun. There’s also a motor skills park where you can test your balance and agility. Ever tried skiing in summer?
#4 Söldenhütte in Werfenweng
Not only the hut itself is impressive, but also the spectacular mountain scenery surrounding it. The rugged Tennengebirge rises directly above the alpine pasture, while the sunny terrace offers breathtaking views across the Salzburg region.
The hut is run by two best friends who share a passion for hospitality and nature. Their warm welcome and excellent cuisine make every visit something special.
Our tip: Kaiserschmarrn Tuesday!
For experienced hikers
If you’re looking for an even bigger adventure, you can continue from here to the summits of Eiskogel or Tauernkogel. These hikes are recommended for experienced mountain hikers only.
Hike to the hut: approx. 1.5 hours
#5 Karseggalm
Karseggalm is a true legend. At more than 400 years old, it is one of the oldest continuously operated alpine huts in the region. Once you arrive, be sure to step inside. Cheese is still smoked over the open fireplace today – an impressive example of living alpine tradition.
Karseggalm is especially famous for its homemade products. Bread, butter, cheese, bacon, sausages, fruit juices, and schnapps all come directly from the farm. You can taste the difference with every bite. Combined with the fresh mountain air and the stunning alpine scenery, every traditional snack tastes even better. Hike: approx. 1.5 hours
To be honest, we could easily recommend another 20 mountain huts. But we’d like to save a few secret tips for your stay with us.
We look forward to welcoming you!
