The view from the summit is priceless and the greatest reward after every mountain hike. Far below, the hustle and bustle remain in the valley, while up above you’ll find pure peace and tranquility. It’s the perfect place to slow down, unwind, and simply enjoy the moment.
Here are our 3 favorite mountain peaks around Aktivhotel Alpendorf:
#1 Hochgründeck – 1,827 m
At 1,827 meters, Hochgründeck is one of the highest forested mountains in Europe and, thanks to its spectacular 360-degree panoramic views, one of Austria’s most beautiful viewpoints. Enjoy breathtaking vistas of Hochkönig, the Tennengebirge, Dachstein, Bischofsmütze, the Hohe Tauern, and many more – a sea of over 300 mountain peaks awaits you!
Tip: Before reaching the summit, take off your hiking boots. The final stretch is perfect for a barefoot walk.
Before starting your descent, be sure to stop at Heinrich-Kienerhaus, where you’ll be treated to delicious regional cuisine.
A little further up, along the St. Rupert Pilgrimage Trail, you’ll also find the Peace Chapel – a wonderful place to pause and reflect.
Hiking time: approx. 2.5 hours.
#2 Heukareck – 2,100 m
This mountain hike requires good fitness, sure-footedness, and a head for heights. Once you reach the summit, you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views across the entire Salzach Valley as far as Werfen, as well as Hochkönig, the Mandelwände, and even Grossglockner. With a little luck, you’ll also spot chamois and marmots on the steep mountain slopes.
You can reach Heukareck either from Großarl (approx. 2–3 hours hiking time) or directly from Aktivhotel Alpendorf (approx. 4–5 hours). And if you prefer admiring the mountains from below, you can enjoy views of Heukareck every day from our sunny terrace.
Tip: Bring plenty of water, as the Heukareck area has very few water sources. The last spring is located roughly one-third of the way up. On your way back down, we recommend stopping at Niggltalalm.
#3 Sonntagskogel – 1,839 m
The Alpendorf gondola not only takes you to the popular family attraction “Ghost Mountain”, but also serves as the perfect starting point for a hike to Sonntagskogel. Along the way, you’ll pass the beautiful Sonntagskogel mountain lake, where an easy circular trail, benches, and hammocks invite you to relax. After the lake, a forest trail leads to the summit, where you’ll enjoy what is arguably the most stunning panoramic view in the region. Hiking time: approx. 3 hours. If you still have energy afterwards, don’t miss a visit to the beautiful Maurachalm.
Feeling inspired to conquer some of our beautiful mountain peaks? Several times a week, our hiking guides accompany guests into the mountains and show you the region’s most beautiful hidden spots. And of course, we’re always happy to recommend the perfect hike for the day. :-)
Good to know: Thanks to our hotel’s outstanding hiking expertise, we’re officially recognized as one of the “Best Alpine Hiking Hotels.”
Wishing you wonderful days in the mountains!
